How Unleashed has Helped the National Distillery Company to Grow

In 2019, Blair Nicholl and his co-founder, Ricardo, started the award-winning National Distillery Company in Blair’s kitchen during their days off work. Just six weeks after their first run of gin, they opened their manufacturing facility in Ahuriri, New Zealand. Their hard work led to them winning Best Gin in New Zealand in 2024 and Best New Zealand Made Spirit in 2025.

Challenge

  • Losing $70,000 of stock because of human error

  • No stock counting schedule

  • Incorrect data input

  • Heavy admin tasks

Approach

  • Adopted Unleashed inventory management software to improve daily operations

Result

  • Complete control of day-to-day operations

  • Confidence in stock takes

  • Reduction in admin tasks

The Challenge

The NDC team used spreadsheets and Microsoft Word to manage their inventory. Because of the number of people involved and the lack of a stock-counting schedule, there was no accountability or confidence in the amount of stock on hand – leading to $70,000 in stock going missing due to human error.

How Unleashed has Helped

Finding unaccounted stock

Before Unleashed, the team struggled with accurate data input. During an inventory count, the team would find unaccounted stock due to products being mislabelled in their inventory management documents.

Now with Unleashed, they have processes in place to see inconsistencies before stock goes missing, stopping thousands of dollars of inventory from getting lost, and ensuring their inventory records to be 100% accurate.

Complete control from miles away

Blair has found an inventory management system instrumental for improving the National Distillery Company’s bottom line. However, with not being in the office regularly, he previously struggled to keep an eye on daily operations.

Unleashed gives Blair complete control of the business's day-to-day activity, no matter where he is in the world, ensuring the team is on track and targets are met.

[Unleashed] has allowed me to really have an understanding of what's happening in my company day to day, whether I'm in Auckland, Australia, or America, which takes a lot of pressure off me wondering what's happening or if orders have been put out.” – Blair Nicholl, co-founder

Reducing the admin burden

Blair wanted to keep a constant eye on sales and income to grow the business. However, the admin burden fell to a single member of their team, and with three of NDC's directors wanting important updates, the administration duties were becoming a heavy task.

However, Unleashed allows them to easily find answers and export reports when needed, reducing the amount of time spent on finding data, building reports, and updating key stakeholders – allowing the team to shift their focus and concentrate on day-to-day important tasks.

“I would say it [Unleashed] has allowed our accounts team to be more focused on their day-to-day important tasks and that we've been able to pull high-level reporting that we need on customers, suppliers, and our sales team.” – Blair Nicholl, Co-founder

What’s Next for National Distillery Company?

The National Distillery Company plans to grow, expand their product range, and become a full distribution company. With Unleashed to support, Blair believes the inventory management software is the “perfect fit” to scale up.

I recommend Unleashed for any company that's got more than three employees, and that is doing everything. In hindsight, I would've loved to have started with Unleashed, even though I thought I was probably too small in business. When you're manufacturing, things grow very quickly, and you've got to be ready for growth.

When you need a lawyer, you should get a lawyer. When you need an accountant, you should get an accountant. And when you need to be running a stock system, it's all encompassing. You need advice, and you need a stock system.” – Blair Nicholl, Co-founder
