Unleashed Software is holding an Unleashed Hackathon this Friday, 16th June! For those not in the know, Hackathons are a playful exploration of creativity through technology; people come together to use technology to transform cool ideas into reality.

Why a Hackathon?

Following on from regular hackday sessions, Unleashed decided to dedicate an entire day for the team to unleash their creativity and ingenuity. Hackathons are especially good tools for stimulating creativity and problem-solving, especially under the time pressures. “Hackathons gives developers more satisfaction and personal development. As a developer, you might have creative ideas but no chance to put that into action,” says Chris Liu, the Development Team Lead at Unleashed. The options are endless – their developers and testers can select their own project of topic to work on for the day.

Engaging the next generation

Unleashed loves supporting our local community and schools, and promoting opportunities to further technology and software development endeavours. With that community focus in mind, Unleashed has invited students from local colleges, including Orewa College, Carmel College and Western Springs College. These talented students are winners of a coding competition run by Massey University. They’ll get the chance to work with some of the best SaaS developers on some fun projects. “We believe it’ll be a good opportunity for them to understand creativity outside their school, and how that can happen in a commercial environment,” explains Chris.

With its project-based challenges, Hackathons provide a great environment for giving students a taste of the IT industry. In light of the skill shortage in New Zealand, Unleashed hopes to inspire students towards pursuing a career in this industry. Chris says, “we want to give the students some understanding of what the commercial environment looks like.”

With everyone’s enthusiasm and energy, this year’s Hackathon will definitely result in many exciting developments for the team.
