It’s the start of winter in the Southern Hemisphere and sales are usually low in this off-peak period. This down time provides retails with a huge opportunity to properly prepare and effectively plan for the peak shopping season ahead.

Spring clean

That’s right, this is the perfect time to have a good old fashion spring clean. Go through everything, throw out the junk and create a clearance pile of any outdated inventory stock that can be salvaged to recoup a little cash.

Use this time to clean your store from top to bottom and undertake any maintenance or repair jobs that need doing. Rearrange the shop floor, circular layouts work best to expose customers to a greater amount of merchandise. Ensure aisles are clear for customers to easily navigate around the store and remember to utilise all available space, including the areas above display cabinets and racks.

Presentation is everything so make sure you have plenty of displays to show off your products in the best way. Create a focal point and don’t be scared to use colour to draw consumers to your merchandise and where practical, use signage to highlight the features and benefits of your inventory stock.

Take stock

Yes, that means pausing to think carefully about your stock situation, but it also means actual stock taking to access you next best move. Does your physical stock count match your recorded stock quantities?

Once your stock taking activities are complete, any inventory stock that has been lost, stolen or has declined in value can be written down.

While you’re redesigning the store layout, also take the time to consult your sales records to ensure there is no stagnant stock taking up prime display space; look for items that are better off discontinuing. These and other slow-moving products can be added to that clearance pile in the storeroom, marked down and sold via a summer sales event.

Freshen up

With the continued growth of mobile commerce, retailers also need to adopt a multi-channel approach. By ensuring your website is responsive across all devices, you can provide customers with a seamless experience across all channels.

You’ve culled the clutter, sorted the store and wowed your website. It’s often said that a clear environment is conducive to a clear mind. So now you should be feeling refreshed and ready to start planning for the business year ahead.
